The idea behind this simple solution to expensive camera doorbells came from a visit to a friend who had just returned from hospital.
The camera doorbell was a battery version and the batteries were flat so there was no way to call the occupant. On searching through our iPhones's contact lists in the hope of finding an old WhatsApp contact to get in touch, we realised there had to be a simpler solution.
We wanted a system that was both easy to use and easy to install. We didn't want electricians involved and knew that any solution should not use batteries. NFC tags are used everywhere for simple contactless payments and, having found nothing commercially available, we built prototypes using them to see if our solution worked. Within a few days we were using the prototypes for real, they were so useful.
One of the main advantages we found was using multiple tags in remote locations. We installed our prototypes at the entrance to a marina for a boat owner, on a gate down a long drive where there was no wi-fi, in the house of a disabled friend to notify their care team and at the front and back gates of houses because callers often used either.
The prototypes were used for nearly 3 months while we modified the App to make it simple to use and cover all uses. We wanted users to be able to intuitively use the system without complex instructions so that anyone could start to use it without having to learn anything first. Hopefully you find it as useful and easy to use as we have.
